According to Urban SP SV Rajasekhar Babu, police seized red sanders logs that were kept ready for transportation near Sri Bhaktanjaneya Swamy temple on Srinivasamangapuram – Srivari Mettur road on Wednesday afternoon. Police caught 45 labour and the remaining managed to escape. Police seized red sanders logs and one lorry. Led by Tirupati West DSP SK Babu, Tirupati Armed Forces DSP Ilial Basha and Chandragiri CI Nagabhushanam, University CI Nagasubbanna, East SI Timmayya and their staff and ID party and staff took part in the raid. The Urban SP said the cost of the logs will be around Rs one crore. SP Rajasekhar Babu further said they have been arrested 610 red sanders smugglers in 2013 and 56 cases have been filed. Eight lorries and 23 other vehicles have been seized during these raids and red sanders logs weighing 45 tonnes have been recovered. While during last year, 58 cases were filed, 183 thieves were arrested and eight lorries, 25 other vehicles and 94 tonnes of red sanders logs were seized, he added. The SP said that they are not only nabbing the smugglers but also those officials who help them in the smuggling. DSP Uday Kumar who was leading the Special Task Force said they have intensified the vigilance in the State and also in Chennai and Bengaluru. He said they kept a vigil on check posts and also on the officials who are negligent towards their duty.
