Internet Neutrality: A new thread Technology can foster equity or disenfranchise it The issue of Internet neutrality has cropped up repeatedly on various threads of WE Are The Market Force. It is a serious issue for independent groups and individuals like ourselves. Its about time we open a thread on the topic. This is the best conversation-starter I could find. Here are the lead two paragraphs: In the Internet Age, technology can be used to foster greater social and economic equity, but it can just as easily be distorted to further disenfranchise America’s have-nots. In the Ferguson city police shooting, for instance, social media is the central platform for organizing protest and forcing mainstream media to cover the story. At the same time, we have seen how large companies like Facebook and Google can manipulate their control over our data and threaten our most basic privacies. The Internet can give a powerful new voice to the historically oppressed, or be used to chill controversial speech. It is in many ways the most critical battleground for civil equality in our time.
