Is it possible to become a dendrophiliac within the space of an hour? The day turned sultry, right on the cusp of raining, when the air gets all heavy and breathy. The skies, with their bedroom eyes, were heady and in need of release, but they fought the urge. I found a glorious tree to spread beneath and lay my skin right on the grass feeling its green seep into me... I lay there reading immersed in a world within a world within a world. After an hour like this, I closed my book, stared up at the looming canopy of this great tree when suddenly it reached out to me. I felt more than myself... Caught up in its branches, caressed by its leaves, I was pressed into its bark until I became one with its trunk, splintered into being, going from my me to our we. I exhaled musk and blossom, inhaled the dew of the very first dawn, felt the strength of my roots digging down within the clay within the rock within the we of me, deepening the flower in my flesh, feeding from the earth, drinking from a fount that needs no priest to make it holy water, a thirst I never realized I had was slaked. As I was released from this embrace, I stood up on two feet as I always had, and swayed and felt the stars in their heaven tilting toward me.
