It has been stated that the frog tip/sole junction can be used as a landmark to help identify the location of the coffin bone, and subsequently the optimal breakover point. There are theories on balance that are based on this assumption. Brian Hampson, Ph.D. and Mike Savoldi conducted research to find the validity of using the frog tip-sole junction and published their findings in the European Farrier’s Journal. Their findings showed that this solar marker is not an accurate predictor of the location of P3 within the hoof capsule. The frog tip, sole junction varied one and three eights of an inch (1 3/8”) in the specimens studied.
