It has been the end of a long process (the Koala Plan of Management) and I think that we are all relieved that it can finally be put out into the community to get feedback SO THAT THE KOALAS CAN BE PROTECTED AND THRIVE - Cr Barry Longland, Tweed Valley Weekly (18/09/2014) Tonight Cr Longland took a stand against the protection of the threatened koala community at Black Rocks by voting against the locking of the koala gate. This decision is wholly at odds with the recommendations of councils own Koala Advisory Committee, ecologists and staff. Unfortuantely we have a critical issue here and the immediate goal is to reduce koala mortality as we cannot afford to lose anymore Scott Hetherington, Tweed Shire Council Biodiversity Senior Program Leader and Koala Connections Project Leader (Tweed Valley Weekly 18/09/2014). Ecologist Dr Steve Phillips (with over 40 years of experience in koala matters), has announced that the Black Rocks sports field is one – if not the most – important koala recovery location on the Tweed Coast. It supports the most southern currently known resident koala population, and is ideally placed to accommodate both north-south and east-west koala movement. Also tonight, council voted for progressing the establishment of a Mens Shed in this sensitive area to development application stage (4 votes for - including Cr Longland, 3 against). A disappointing result, but we will keep fighting to save the Tweed Coasts last remaining koalas.
