It is generally presumed that, as a progressive left-wing liberal, I am less patriotic or somehow not one to feel pride in my nation & its inhabitants. And while I will be the first to enumerate & condemn the faults & problems of our government & our people, I am also the first to have a tear in my eye & a lump in my throat when our nation rises above political or philosophical differences, & becomes the unified bastion of diversity that we were intended to be. And the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks is such an example. While others may see different meanings in this days--often based on hate, simplistic reasonings, revenge, violence or oppression worldwide, intellectual smugness or superiority--I choose to remember the innocents who were murdered, the heroic first responders, & the confused, frightened & justifiably angry citizens of America. And indeed, it is a day to feel national pride- pride in that as a nation, we were united, we were resolute, & we were not destroyed. And for that, I will GLADLY wave my flag & chant USA on this anniversary. And while there are other times to recall & reflect on the atrocities that have been & are being committed worldwide, & justice & equality factors must be addressed in this country & worldwide, this day is solely one to reflect & remember the specifics of a single moment in history.
