It occurs to me that the words of Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address have direct application here. We are not yet in a military civil war. Still, and maybe worse, we are in similar circumstances where the issues and the outcomes are as momentous. "Now we are engaged in a great [national debate over "security"], testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure." At the moment I give it only even odds.... The powers that would "destroy the village in order to save it" are immense. And not particularly open to discussion.
