Its 5:37am and Im on my way to the airport….. Yesterday and last night was Frankie Knuckles day. As I prepared for his memorial I sat in a corner broke down and cried. I said to myself its only 3pm and Im already a mess, Im never going to make it through the ceremony. Well my brother and dearest friend Frankie gave me the strength and got me through it. Ive never prepared a speech ever in my life but after monday nights memorial in Chicago where I couldnt pull it together, I knew I couldnt take the risk of falling down. Last night was not a memorial. It was a CELEBRATION that I know Frankie was proud of. The que was down the block just like a club night. I got to see many old faces that I havent seen in ages. There was so much love and happiness. Yes we all cried and laughed together last night. The program was uplifting and exciting. The opening orchestral piece by Peter Schwartz was EPIC. The choir singing Soon I will Be Done was a tear jerker. The Rev Elder Kevin E. Taylor gave us a powerful sermon fit for a king. Robert Owens brought us to TEARS with a special rendition of TEARS. Nicki Richards singing Matter of Time, Melanie Daniels singing a gospel accapella that just sent u thru the heavens. And last but not least Ann Nesby and the choir singing THE PRESSURE what a closing! Everyone was on their feet clapping, crying and singing. My brother Frankie got a send off fit for royalty. it was EPIC. I want to thank everyone that came from all over the world to pay THEIR respects to the TRUE KING OF HOUSE MUSIC. And a special thanks to Danny Madden our host and musical director for the evening. Maria, Hector, Alex, Steven Barkan, Shorty, Lisa Pure, Susan Cistone, Manny Ward, Dan Pucciarelli, Tedd Paterson, David Shaw, Frederick Dunson, Maurice and Artie Arborleda and the staff from Liberty Theatre. If I forgot someone I apologize. And last but not least my biggest hero Judy Weinstein for which she is the true glue of DEF MIX. I went to sleep feeling….HAPPY… AMEN!
