Its funny the things that become touchstones in your life. Something to keep in mind as Dan and I are trying to bring up a child in this crazy world. Shaking the cobwebs from my head this morning and in desperate desire of that first cup of coffee, I first headed outdoors to be greeted by a morning temperature reading of 4 degrees. Chickens and rabbit to water, horses to feed, let the dogs out (make sure the puppy gets his job done before coming back in.) Words of my parents ringing in my ears, animals get taken care of first (kids included in that phrase I am to assume.) That one echoes most loudly on cold winter mornings. A touchstone. Mid-morning cross-country adventure, my dog at my heels. Studying the signs left the night before by the four legged members of our community. A deer crossed here, coyote there, mice tunneling under the snow hoping to avoid the owls. (Looks like the owls went hungry last night btw) Brought back memories of plaster of paris 4-H projects with Dad. We spent hours combing the Yellowstone for the perfect tracks. I always enjoy reading the stories written in nature, guess I come by it honestly. A touchstone. Afternoon was a special treat. An afternoon matinee with my husband and best friend. We watched the final piece of the Hobbit. An adventure started about 25 years ago. Dad patiently read the entire book to me as part of our bedtime ritual. Introducing me to characters from his childhood. Breathing life into Tolkiens characters. For weeks on end, my dreams were filled with Smaug the fire breathing dragon, Thorin Oakenshield and Bilbo Baggins. Tolkien too is a touchstone. These touchstones are not that unique, not particularly incredible. But I have come to recognize them as the building blocks of my life, creating a foundation for who I am and what I find truly important. The animals remind me of how important it is to put others needs before my own, the tracks remind me that just because I dont see something happening, doesnt mean that it isnt. And Hobbits, well, they remind us that big things come in little packages and even ordinary people can have extraordinary adventures.
