I’ve received several questions regarding the secret ballot process established by our Founding Fathers in the leadership elections of 1789. While votes for Speaker of the House were made public starting in 1839, I shared the belief of many conservatives who supported returning to a secret ballot for Speaker so that members could work their will without fear of retribution. I believe that’s consistent with our conservative principles, whether it’s fighting for integrity at the ballot box or stopping labor unions from imposing card check on their employees.
