JUST DO IT. Overused phrase? Nothing more than a clever marketing tool? Personally, I find these to be words of wisdom. Who ALWAYS feels like working out? Who, at the end of a long day, WITHOUT FAIL fist pumps the sky while punching out on the timeclock and says, Yeah! ... its workout time!! What woman, who has looked after everyone else around her (wiped noses and bottoms, grocery shopped, cooked meals, cleaned the house, played taxi-mom, volunteered at a local charity ... etc etc) thinks, I know ... Ill add ONE MORE THING to my day and get in a killer workout!! Sometimes youve just got to dig in and DO IT. Most times youll feel better once those endorphins kick in. You may have to drag yourself, kicking and screaming, to the gym or to the track or to your garage or living room to bang out a session ... but pretty much every time, youll feel better for having done it. I guarantee it! And, even if you dont immediately feel like a million bucks, in the long run you will be healthier. Why? ... because consistency is key. Get active and stay active. Keep that date for your workout session (unless you are sick ... or unless you are wiped out from OVER-training, in which case we need to talk!) Case in point: I work as a personal trainer. I spend a number of hours counting reps, spotting lifters, schlepping weights and functional equipment, and researching and writing programs and routines. Sometimes Ive had it up to here with working out. But, I endeavor to keep the date. Its that important to me. So maybe thats our bottom line: Prioritizing fitness because its important. Its important to do what we can to stay healthy in order to live a quality life in the time weve been allotted on planet earth. Anyway, today was one of those days. Getting in a workout (training if you will) was on my to do list today. Its HIIT day. However, I wasnt really dancing a jig over the prospect of getting it done. Nonetheless, I forged ahead and found a routine I liked (I planned to do a home session with the equipment I have on hand), gathered what I needed, put on some great music, and got to it. I felt so much better for having done it, that I had to write about it. (You could say I get some of my best inspiration when my blood is pumpin!) So, whats holding you back from JUST DOING IT? If its your attitude/mindset in the midst of or at the end of a busy day, try this: Put on your workout clothes. Decide on a workout (maybe you just want to do an interval power walk ... it doesnt have to be complicated). Then commit to doing 10 minutes. After 10 minutes are up, evaluate and see if you have it in you to do, say, 10 more minutes. Lather, rinse, and repeat. If not, call it good at 10 minutes. But determine to give it your best for that 10 minutes. (Tip: If you do several 10 minute sessions throughout the day -- when you have the time -- thats completely legit!) ~ In the interest of speaking to those crazy, extenuating circumstances like being a caregiver 24/7 (bless you) or dealing with a chronic illness or being physically debilitated in some way (even if only for a season), please hear my heart in all of this when I say: You must take care of yourself if you expect to be able to take care of others. You will do well do find a way to be active, at least in some small measure. ~ Yours for a healthy life, Teri PS-- Heres the routine I chose for tonights HIIT training session in case any of you are sandbag lovers, like me. I modified it to suit MY needs (which is a whole nuther subject, but keep it in mind, ok?).
