Job 1:18-22 While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brothers house, and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. And he said, “Naked I came from my mothers womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong. Verses 13 through 17 were not included so as to save some space. To sum up those verses: Job lost all of his many animals and servants. Starting with verse 18 we see that Job was informed of the most tragic news that his children were all dead. I dont need to explain to you how devastating this had to be. I havent lost any children, but I am sure there are some reading this who may have. I dont know what I would do if I lost my children. I know what I would not do. I would not turn on God and blame Him. How do I know this? Its because I have experienced other losses, and God is the one who got me through it. I have seen faithful brothers and sisters in Christ go through even tragic losses and they maintained their faith in God. This gives me confidence and builds my faith. What is different about this situation with Job is that he lost so much more than I ever have, or likely ever will. And it all happened in one day! I personally dont know of anyone who has ever lost so much in a lifetime, much less a day. Thats why, to me, Job stands out. He lost all of that, and yet the bible says he did not sin nor accuse God of doing him wrong. He says, Naked I came from my mothers womb , and naked shall I return. the Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Job realized that God is the one who gave him everything and it is Gods to take away if he so chooses. As was stated yesterday, God did so because he knew this was how Job would react and he wanted to show that to Satan. In the future, when loss comes - and it will - how will you react? Will you begin to question God? Will your faith waver? Or, will you say, Blessed be the name of the Lord? ~Luke
