Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of HealthCare Professionals Press Statement Posted: 24/Dec/2014 The Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of healthcare Professionals has released a press statement dated 23rd December 2014 and made available to medicalworldnigeria by Adeyeye Adetunji Tam of the Association of medical laboratory scientist of Nigeria (PRO, AMLSN). You would recall that medicalworld Nigeria had reported that the Federal Government and JOHESU held a meeting on monday 22nd December 2014 which was convened at the instance of the honourable supervising minister of labor and productivity, kabiru Taminu Turaki SAN, FCIarb to know the extent of the implementation of the following grievances; 1) Non-promotion of our members from salary CONHESS 14 to 15 as directors having stayed for 4-5 years on the same salary level without promotion in most federal tertiary hosptials 2) Immediate release of circular on adjustment of salary since january 2014 and immediate payment of at least two months arrears while the remaning is paid after being accomodated in the 2015 budget. 3) Immediate release of the circular on extension of retirement age to be back dated to february 2014 when the issue was presented to the national council on establishments. 4 Immediate and full payment of arrears of salaries of CONHESS 10 skipping outstanding since the year 2010 5) payment of arrears of specialist allownace to qualified hosptial based professionals, with effect from 1st january 2010 in line with the natioanl industrial court of nigeria (NICN) ruling 6) Addressing the lopsidedness in the membersip of boards of management of tertiary hospitals 7) Need to define the functions and power of honourary consultants in teaching hosptials and the need to appoint more hospital based consultants instead of honourary consultants. 8) Release of harmonized scheme of service for nurses and midwives in line with the NICN ruling. Also in attendance were the chairman, National salaries, incomes and wages commission, chief R.o Egbule, the permanent secretary, fedral ministry of health and labour and productivity, their direcors, officals of budget office, office of the secretary to the government of the federation and office of the head of civil service of the federation. To our amazement the responses of the fedral govenment could not meet the expectation of JOHESU, moreso that governmetn has not been able to implement any of the judgement of the national industrial court of nigeria (NICN) deliverd on july 22nd 2013. This unseriousness on the part of federal government cannot give us the courage to convince our members to suspend the current industrial action. Instead of the federal governemnt to do the needful and demonstrate commitment towards bringing an end to the plight of nigerians and healthworkers by addressing the issues and restoring publich health services, it has resorted to stopping the salaries of our members which was not done to members of NMA and MDCAN that embarked on illegal strike action even at the peak of Ebola Virus Disease outbreak. Rather, two months arrears of adjusted salary were paid to them in addition to their regular monthly salary. We wish to make it abundanlty clear that we embarked on dispute of right and not dispute of interest and we shall not succumb to any threat of intimidation and harrassment by the government. We wish members of the public to note that it is the fedral governemtn that should be blamed and held responsible for the non resolution of this conflict, since they have chosen to continually discriminate, marginalize and victimise members of JOHESU nationwide. Also, we wish to appeal very passionately to the good people of nigeria to bear with us and understand our plight why we have to take this painful but inevitable action, bearing in mind that we have been on this same issue since year 2010 We urge all members of JOHESU nationwide to remain steadfast on the ongoing struglle and do everything lawfully possible to sustain this struggle, so as to ensure that the present acts of neo colonialism and slavery in the health sector is put to a stop. We passionately call on the good citizens of nigeria including members of the national assembly, traditional rulers and NBA to prevail on the federal government to accede to our legitimate demands expeditiously. In conclusion, we appreciate the tireless efforts of the supervisiing minister of labour and productivity, Kabiru Turaki SAN, FCIarb in tring to find solution to bring an end to the ongoing strike action. we urge him to continue This press statement made available to medicalworldnigeria was signed by Dr Ayuba Wabba the national president medical and health workers union of nigeria, Adeniji A A, national president NANNM, Dr B akintola, national president SSAUTHRIAI, Faniran F. o NUAHP National president, Dr Godswill Okara Chairperson Assembly of Health professionals
