Juans goat Chocolate just died. She was probably about 12 years old and we had gotten her whens she was like 2 weeks old. We werent even living in Malibu at the time and Juan was really wanting to get another goat. We bottle fed her and raised her like a baby. She was a happy goat, always wanted to eat and loved loved to follow Juan around. She was a black and white Nubian and Juan adored her. She was very protective of him and whenever his friends came to see the goats, she would put her hair up on her back and go after them. Juans friends would tease him and say that they wanted her for their next BBQ ... They call it Biria and its a delicacy in the Mexican culture to BBQ goat. Juan would get really mad because he just loved that goat, as he does all his animals. One time I asked Juan... Why do we have all these goats and lambs? We didnt eat them, we could never turn them out without babysitting them because the coyotes would kill them and it just seemed silly to have them. He replied .... because I love them just like you love your horses. I learned to shut my mouth after that. Today Chocolate was not feeling well and she was shivering. Juan was beside himself. We werent sure what to do and then he walked outside and she took her last breath. Ugh... I hate to see Juan sad. He feels terrible but hes relieved that she passed on her own and so quickly. When one of your longtime animals passes it stirs up so much emotion, memories and then some grief. Tomorrow will be a new day and life goes on. Lots of hugs for Juan tonight.
