Just a reminder! On Thursday evening August 1st, the UH Sea Grant Hanauma Bay Education Program continues its public outreach series at the City and County of Honolulu’s Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve. Thursday August 1, Ecological Evaluation of Coral Reef Resources at Kahalu‘u Bay, Hawai‘i Dr. Kaipo Perez, Doctoral Recipient, Biology Department, University of Hawai‘i Mānoa Kahalu‘u Bay is a popular snorkeling location on the Island of Hawai‘i and attracts more than 400,000 visitors each year. Consequently, there has been a growing community concern over the sustainability of the bay’s marine resources. With that said, Kaipo Perez assessed coral reef resources (coral and fish communities) at Kahalu‘u Bay in order to understand the environmental and biological factors that influence the abundance and distribution or coral and fish communities. Furthermore, scientific ecological observations were integrated with Traditional Environmental Knowledge (TEK) and cultural practices in order to bridge the gaps between culture and science. This integration can provide a holistic approach to make sound decisions concerning reef resources at Kahalu‘u Bay. As always, these events begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening in the theater at the Hanauma Bay Education Center. Events are free and open to the public, with no charge for parking after 5:30 p.m. We hope to see you on Thursday evening! These programs are supported and funded by the City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation.
