K-9 RAMBO & Officer Dustin Bragg The Red Oak Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer Dustin Bragg and K9 Rambo have completed their training and are on the streets and already making a difference their first day on the job. Certified through the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA) they are making an impact on our community in a positive way. Universal K-9 a world renowned company specializing in providing: Personal Protection Dogs, Dual Purpose Dogs, Selection Tested Dogs, Arson Dogs, Explosives Dogs, Narcotics Dogs, Demining Dogs, Basic Obedience and Tracking has provided the dog for the department free of charge through a grant program. This is a cost effective program that also saves dogs lives . We have been provided a free Belgian Malinois dual purpose dog from Universal K-9’s Grant Dog program. While we obtained a free pure breed dog, it should be notedmany of the dogs in the program are healthy shelter dogs with a fantastic drive to do the work. Those K-9s are usually saved before euthanasia and given a second chance at life with a purpose, fulfilling their desire to serve. K-9 Rambo can track lost persons or suspects of a crime and locate narcotics. He is trained in handler protection as well. This is a valuable asset to the department on many levels and provides us a fantastic tool to assist or community and makes the department more efficient and effective. One of the four types of Belgian sheepherding dogs, the Belgian Malinois is an alert, high-energy breed, popular as both a police and military working dog. Although sometimes mistaken for the German Shepherd Dog, the Malinois is more elegant in build and lighter-boned, but does not lack for strength, agility or herding ability. Active participants in conformation, obedience, schutzhund, herding, sledding, and tracking, the breed ranges in color from rich fawn to mahogany, with black tips on the hairs and a black mask and ears. Developed in the city of Malines, where it got its name, the Malinois shares a common foundation with the Belgian Sheepdog and the Belgian Tervuren. In fact, the Belgian dogs share a breed standard in all countries except the United States. The original breeders prized the Malinois working character, and historically, the breed has been the favorite type of Belgian Shepherd in its native country. Intelligent and trainable, the Belgian Malinois possesses a strong desire to work and is happiest with regular activity and a job to do. A relatively easy keeper due to their medium size and short coat, this confident breed loves their families, but may be somewhat reserved with strangers. They are naturally protective of their owners without being overly aggressive. We are pleased to add this team to the department and they are anxious to make a positive impact on our community.
