Karnali Ayurveda Hospital reels under shortage At a time when hoards of locals are visiting Karnali Zonal Ayurveda Hospital every day, the hospital´s medical stocks are down to the last box. If this scarcity is not tackled sometime soon, the patients will have to be referred to some other medical facilities after two weeks, according to hospital authorities. The hospital administration blames the government´s insufficient budget allocation for the problem and also the usual delay in its distribution. Known as one of the oldest hospitals in the district, it is visited by around 45 patients daily. For four months of this fiscal year, the hospital has received only Rs 15,000 and the stock of medicines bought with the amount is nearly finished, informed Yogesh Baidya, a physician at the hospital. “The medicines that arrive at the hospital are of good quality but it´s the low quantity we receive that hits us hard every year,†said the physician. “The remaining stock will not last more than two weeks,†he added. As per the hospital records, more than 5,500 patients with various illnesses were admitted there last year. “Moreover, the working environment at the hospital has also become unfavorable these days as we have been encountering numerous cases where the physicians are manhandled by agitated locals,†said the physician. He further stated that they have taken up the problem with the government a couple of times but they always turned a deaf ear. “If this shortage continues any longer, it´s the poor who will be affected,†he said. Besides the delay in the supply of medicines, the hospital has been reeling under other major problems as well. The medical officers have been compelled to use their own mobile phones since the hospital lacks telephone services and the computers don´t have internet. “We have an electric motor to help produce ayurvedic medicines but lack of sufficient voltage has prevented us from using it,†the physician further said.
