LOG LINE CONTEST - In celebration of Jen Grisanti Consultancys 7-Year Anniversary, she will be having a Log Line Contest during the month of January. You have until January 31st to turn in your log lines. You can email them to Jen at jennifer@jengrisanticonsultancy. They can be a Log Line For your Life or a Log Line For Your Pilot using my Log Line Formula STORYWISE © LOG LINE AND LIFE STORY ARC FORMULAS INSTRUCTIONS – You can write a Log Line For Your Life and a Life Story Arc OR the 5 log lines for your pilot that I mention below) FORMULA FOR “LOG LINE FOR YOUR LIFE” • A summation of your story with an emotional hook and a twist of irony. • Think set up of who (create empathy), dilemma, action, and goal with a twist of irony. INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL LOG LINES FOR YOUR LIFE (You can write an internal and an external or a combination of both.) • Write log lines for your life that are external and internal. • External is what you want. • Internal is why you want it. EXAMPLE OF MY INTERNAL/EXTERNAL LOG LINE After an ambitious yet overworked and disillusioned studio executive loses her job, she redefines her direction by opening her own company and helping others to realize their dreams while simultaneously realizing her own. EXAMPLE OF MY INTERNAL LOG LINE A saddened and distraught daughter, plagued by the thought of her mom’s illness, must learn to calm down some of the busyness of her mind in order to be in the moment and see the beauty of the present before the time is past. LOG LINES FOR YOUR PILOT (must write series log lines, pilot log line, log line for your B & C arcs, external and internal log line for your lead character.) FORMULA FOR A LOG LINE FOR YOUR TV PILOT • Set up of WHO (create empathy) • Dilemma • Action • Goal • Twist of irony • Begin your pilot writing process by writing a log line for your series and a log line for your pilot. • The log line for your series gives us a glimpse into what your series will be. • The log line for your pilot is the summary of the A story. • Write a log line for your B and C story arcs. • Write an external and internal log line for your lead character. EXAMPLE OF A SERIES LOG LINE – From my book, Story Line: Finding Gold In Your Life Story BREAKING BAD SERIES LOG LINE – “When Walt, a high school chemistry teacher with a wife and a handicapped son, is given a diagnosis of terminal cancer, he turns to what he knows best, chemistry, and decides to make and distribute meth in order to have something to leave his family.” WHO – A high school chemistry teacher with a wife and handicapped son DILEMMA – is given a diagnosis of terminal cancer ACTION – decides to make and distribute meth GOAL – in order to have something to leave his family. LOG LINE CONTEST INSTRUCTIONS You can write a Log Line For Your Life and Life Story Arc 0R the FIVE log lines that I mentioned for your TV pilot. - Series log line, Pilot log line (summary of A story), log lines for the B and C arcs, external/internal log line for the central character. Deadline is January 31st at noon. Winners will be selected and announced on 2/2/15.
