Last day in Rio. On this, my sixth visit, Ive still never bothered visiting Sugarloaf or that big-ass religious statue on the mountain. Ive seen the photos. There are no sweaty tourists in my way in the photos. I have, however, embedded myself, thanks to friends, in fantastic pockets of Carioca life. Going to local parties, stupendous dance bars, restaurants on little side streets, revisiting the same spot on the beach near Posto 9 where Renato takes good care of me with chairs and parasols and caipirinhas, going to great meetings with current and potential business partners, people-watching at outside street corner cafés for hours, riding bicycles all over the place, playing pool in a pool hall with a DJ, you name it. Ive experienced attempts to rip off my credit card twice, Ive had money stolen from my hotel room, last night in Lapa, three girls tried to steal my phone (too slow and obvious but in maybe in training for the World Cup and Olympics). Its a hard place to leave, this Rio de Janeiro. My friends are hard people to fly away from. Ill be back. By all accounts to stage the first Rio version of the Svajerløb - the traditional Copenhagen cargo bike race in May. If not before.
