Liked our post on our smallest and oldest diesel locomotives? Then you may love this one on our biggest and newest locos. Introducing the Deli Diesel Locomotive - the most numerous and most powerful locomotive type in SMRTs fleet of Engineering Trains. First introduced in September 1994, Deli Diesels can be found at Bishan Depot, Changi Depot and Ulu Pandan Depot. Nineteen Deli Diesels are in our fleet. In day time, these locomotives sit mostly idle. After sundown, activity stirs at our depots as our Engineering Trains colleagues prepare their vehicles and engineering equipment for the nightly maintenance regime so vital for keeping our train network fit for service. After passenger trains are stabled for the night, Deli Diesels roll out for duty. Operated by a crew of two SMRT staff and capable of hauling 240 tons each (compared to 26 tons for the CKG Diesel Locomotives), train spotters may have seen these locomotives linked up with specialised rolling stock or wagons. Speed is a respectable 50km/h. The China-made Deli Diesels weigh 56 tons each and come in two types. The first generation Deli Diesels are numbered D201 to D215. The second generation Deli Diesels carry the series D216 to D219. See the images of D214 and D216 below. Can you spot the differences? These locomotives can be combined with another locomotive to provide added propulsion for maintenance wagons and other heavy machinery. There is no off-day* for our Deli Diesel locomotives. Essential maintenance is carried out seven days a week, in all weather, year-round, to ensure the momentum in upgrading our train network never slackens its pace. It is a vital mission. We do this because we know our commuters want - indeed deserve - better service, a more reliable train network and a safer ride. And our maintenance teams and engineers will work hard, mostly out of sight of commuters as Singapore sleeps, to (re)build trust with all commuters who journey with us. This means YOU. * Work hours for our Engineering Trains colleagues are MOM-compliant. :)
