Lyndsi asked, Ive prayed long and hard, and God has called me to homeschool our two boys (ages 8 and 5.) Im letting our 8-year-old finish out his 3rd grade year in public school, but I went ahead and pulled our 5-year-old out of handicap pre-k in September. This was his second year in the program. He didnt begin actually speaking until he was 3. At 3 he was diagnosed with a speech/language delay, cognitive learning delay, and social anxiety. He did have speech therapy while in pre-k. Autism was ruled out because he DRASTICALLY began to improve. There is no process with him. When he decides to do something (speak, potty train, correctly ride tricycle for the first time), he completely does it. There isnt a process to get there. He speaks well now. He still has a little speech trouble but not much. My question about homeschooling is this: what is the best way to teach him to read? Im homeschooling him this year for pre-k. With the letters we have studied, he can name most of them, match the upper and lowercase, and write them fairly well. However, he doesnt remember the sounds or even grasp that letters have sounds. I realize that, with him, this could very easily change by next year when we start kindergarten, but still I am concerned about teaching him to read. If he cant put sounds with letters, how do I teach him to read? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
