MURRAY TO MOUNTAINS RAIL TRAIL 15 & 16 March 2014 This was an awesome weekend both on and off the bike. It got underway with a bit of a shaky start with a few minor incidents but that didn’t deter us from having a great ride to Bright. We had two tandems on this ride with Maree and Rocky on one and John and Peter (me) on the other. This was Maree and Rocky’s first attempt at riding a long distance on a tandem bike and although they were a bit slow, they completed the 180 km ride both ways in reasonable time. In my view, Rocky has the makings of becoming a great cyclist and member of Melbourne Cycling. We stopped in Myrtleford for lunch at the local bakery to refuel prior to tackling the next stage of our ride to our final destination at Bright. When we arrived in Bright, we made our way to our motel, checked in, cleaned up and headed off to the Bright Brewery to relieve our dry throats with a drop of the local brew and to have dinner. It was Pizza night so most of us tucked into one of the best pizzas I have ever had. After a good night’s sleep, some of us topped up with the motels big breakfast and others made their way to a local café for breaky. Following breakfast, we all made our way to the meet up place in Bright and poor Nora’s day didn’t get off to a good start because she ended up with a fat front tyre on the starting grid. However, it didn’t take too long for the pit crew to rectify the problem and it was time to get back on the rail trail on route for Gapsted Winery for lunch. When we reached Myrtleford, we visited the Butter Factory for coffee and cake before continuing to Gapsted Winery where sixteen of us took up our positions around the dinning table for a gourmet lunch and a few glasses of grape juice. It wasn’t long before we were back on our bikes and making our way back to Wangaratta. We copped a few drops of rain on the way back but we soon dried out. When we arrived in Wangaratta some of us spent some time in the Sydney Hotel having a few drinks and watching the Melbourne Grand Prix while waiting for the train to arrive. The train departure time was not too far away so we made our way to Wangaratta station and prepared to load out bikes onto the train when it arrived. 6:16 pm ticked over and the train arrived on time. We loaded the bikes into the guards van in no time flat, boarded the train and enjoyed our relaxing trip back to Southern Cross Station. I totally enjoyed this weekend as I’m sure everyone did. It’s not just the bike ride that makes this type of event great. It is the social aspect of the the event spending time with awesome people which really make it a sensational weekend. Thank you to Brian Smith who is our fantastic Melbourne Cycling leader and friend for organising this and other such fabulous events.
