Man of Steel Review by Isaac Mendelawitz The video review will be uploaded later next week. Man of Steel is an action filled, science fiction epic, which fans and non-fans of superman will enjoy. Ever since the release of Man of Steel, the film has been receiving many mixed reviews with both sides having arguments which are true. I am a fan of Superman and I absolutely loved the original Donner films. Once I had heard Zach Snyder’s goal heading into the project I felt really sad. I felt sad because Snyder wanted to go away from the Donner superman which was light hearted and a bit of fun. Though, this news had also made me really excited because Zach Snyder wanted to take a realistic approach and instead of making it a fantasy genre, he turned it into a science fiction film which really sees Superman as an Alien and how the world will react to him. The story is an important part for all films and within Man of Steel, and as I mentioned before, the story is more realistic and therefore the story is a lot darker. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer and he is known for his work with the Dark Knight Trilogy. Christopher Nolan is the producer for Man of Steel so with the combo of Nolan and Goyer from the Dark Knight Trilogy, it made me and a lot of people really confident in what Snyder was trying to achieve. The story is really good and closely resembles the story from Superman II Directed By Richard Donner. Man of Steel is an origin story and he has to protect his planet from General Zod who plots to turn planet Earth into his destroyed planet Krypton. This is where the film starts to fall apart a bit. The first half of the film is Clark Kent before he is Superman. I am able to tell that the first half had a lot of input from Nolan as the style is closely similar to that of the Dark Knight Trilogy. The first half is where the story is at its strongest point as we start to really find out who these characters are and what their motives are. Though suddenly we get cut off from this and we get exposed to non stop action. And by non stop, I mean 45 minutes of action where we catch no breaks. The final 45 minutes is the real side of Zach Snyder where there is over the top action with top notch CGI. And the CGI was absolutely amazing. The action is great but it is so different to the tone which was presented earlier in the film, that it just makes it uneven. Do not get me wrong, I thought the action was awesome, I just wished it didn’t create a big contrast in tone between the first and second half of the film. All other areas of the film where really top notch. The acting was brilliant with Michael Shannon as the real standout, being General Zod. Henry Cavill was definitely the right choice for Clark Kent/Superman, though again because of this fast paced storyline, there is no real character arcs to allow the audience to get attached to the characters. Even the popular love interest between Clark Kent and Lois Lane isn’t explored as much as it should have been. Though as much as there are some issues with this film, the film definitely shows that there is potential for this to become another big franchise for Warner Bros. I left the theatre feeling really satisfied with what I saw and it really makes me feel confident in the sequels. I am sure that all of the real Superman stuff where he saves a cat stuck in a tree or a kid falling into Niagra falls will all be in the sequel. The characters I am sure will be explored a lot more in the sequel as well as the love interest between Lois and Clark. Man of Steel is an origin story that explores how Superman came to be and how the world reacted to his presence with a whole lot of action. Everyone who is looking for a science fiction, action packed film will be very pleased. I am giving it a 7.5 out of 10 and for all things film, stay tuned to Mayhem Film Reviews.
