Many otahtkools doesnt seem to know what are the appropriate items to give a celebrity to sign. As a signature ohtahko I can share a few tips. The examples below are assuming the organizers are OK with signing anything and it is up to your own judgement to decide what is the best and most appropriate 1) The safest, cheapest method is a shikishi. Its white, square and so harmless. It will never go wrong. 2) The celebritys items. So what are celebritys items? Rule of the thumb is of course, anything with their names on it. Their CD, artbooks, posters etc. Must be official of course. Though they are some exception. Read on. 2a) How about CDs that are translated / published locally for another country? Eg those from Taiwan? Remember how in the past when we buy Japanese CDs from stores, it will come with an additional piece of paper with all the translated lyrics? That is OK for the celebrity to sign as long as its still published by the same music label the celebrity is under. If it is not, like those from China, then no, dont even try. 2b) How about artbooks thats been translated and distributed by another company for another country? Example artbooks thats been translated to Chinese by Taiwan/HK/China or English by US for their local market? They are still official right? Yes they are still official but ideally, the best is still to get the original copy publish by the original publisher. Reason is simple, different from CDs, books can be licensed to another publisher for publishing in the country it is licensed to, so any sales of the books, the authour/ original company will not earn a cent out of it other than licensing fee. 3) Can I get a seiyuu to sign on my nendoroid/figure/toy of a character he/she voices? The answer is NO. A lot of people seems to think its alright to do that since its the character the seiyuu voice right? The reason is of course licensing again. An anime studio pays the seiyuu (or his/her agency) to get the seiyuu to voice their anime but do u think a toy company pays the seiyuu (or her/her company) to make the nendoroid/figure/toy of him/her? of course no right? The only instance where this is acceptable is when the event where the signing takes place is organized by the toy company or they are the sponsors. 4) Can I get a cosplayer to sign on my nendoroid/figure/toy/poster of a character he/she is cosplaying. Although this idea is stupid at best, why would u get a cosplayer to sign on a toy but since the cosplayer is not under any company/agency, he/she is free to sign on anything eventhough it is morally wrong. Like u can get your mother to sign on your nendoroid. it just doesnt make any sense. 5) Can I get a celebrity to sign on a magazine? Again, this falls under the no right no wrong area but I will suggest not to do that. Reason as I explain before, unless the magazine is the same company the celebrity works for. Though most of times, it depends on the celebrity or his/her manager and also the title of the magazine, If the magazine is very famous like Times magazine, Vanity Fair, Vogue and the celebrity is on the cover then chances are its alright. If its unknown magazines like 8 days / iweekly / your school newsletters, where the editor can just stamp anyone on the cover without interviewing them in person, chance are u better dont try.
