Many people, especially females feel the need to get on stage (for the right or wrong reasons) as soon as possible without thinking about the impact it can have on your life in a number of different areas. These are the 4 critical areas that must be assessed and looked at before even thinking of taking up a contest prep - 1:Mentally - Body Image obsessions or hang ups, Food labelling, eating disorders or poor relationships with food, Uncommitted to the process and self confidence concerns, ARE NOT good signs of a mentally stable person. These issues will only become further pronounced & a greater focus, causing even more mental health issues in the longer term. 2:Physically - Comp prep is not the time you can improve or develop your physique to a particular level. You are only going to be able to refine it. So if you are not physically at the level required, do not start a comp prep simply continue to improve and grow until it is at the necessary level. I will also add physiologically ready. If hormonally and metabolically you are not functioning well, comp prep will only do further harm & making comp prep even more difficult than it already can be. It would be best to continue to improve your metabolic health & function before taking up any deficit dieting. 3:Financially - If you are already living week to week and dont have disposable income then you find out real quick that the costs of competing is not cheap. Youve got the possibility of a higher grocery bill, prep-coaching costs, tanning costs, show entry fee, federation costs, make up, posing suit, posing classes and travel costs (with possible accommodation costs if interstate or not local) all add up. Youve got your day to day cost of living, bills and those sorts of things that dont go away so having financial stress on top of an already stressful situation doesnt make that $5 trophy all that all that appealing. 4:Life - Well this is pretty straight forward. Youve got family, career, study and overall lifestyle to take into consideration. Can you afford to be a little more self centred and self absorbed for the comp prep period? Sure you dont need to stop life as you know it but there is certain things that need adjusting. If youve got a stressful life, or career, bodybuilding on top of that wont get you far. If your family life is already full on or that balance isnt to your liking, doing a comp isnt going to make that easier. Do you enjoy your social life? Doing a comp prep does not mean you cant or dont have a social life but I might mean you can be as free and relaxed as youd like to be. These 4 areas just as important as each other. And if one of those areas isnt right, then its not the right time to get on stage. 3/4 isnt going to cut it. Unless all areas are settled etc then you should not consider doing a show. So while Im not against comp prep and I coach many people who do bodybuilding & fitness shows , its certainly something that I dont encourage a lot. The decision to compete should not be taken lightly and in all reality needs to be looked in the most realistic and objective way possible. Life & Health>Bodybuilding/Fitness Competitions.
