Meet Fluffy the black vulture. Fluffy was hit by a car, leaving him unable to fly in 2007 about 5 miles up the road from our facility. Being true to his species, Fluffy managed not to be caught and helped for well over two months. Honestly, by this time, Fluffy had shown us that he could survive just fine in the wild without flying, but, he’d also proven that he didn’t really care much if he caused car accidents. He got into a very bad habit of running into the road and scaring drivers. We were receiving “near hit” phone calls daily about this vulture who just kept running into the road. After over two months of phone calls about this bratty bird and many failed attempts to capture him, we finally went out with four of us, a sheet, and a few nets and were determined to catch this prankster. As usual, Fluffy showed us just how well vultures survive just fine on the ground, by making fools out of every one of us for quite a while. I’m certain he laughed this entire time. He would jump over short trees that we’d have to go around, go under bushes that we had no hope of getting into and always wait on the other side for us to start all over. I’m pretty sure he spent this entire time laughing at us and enjoying himself. Then, out of the blue, this 6 foot length of 8 foot tall fence appeared in the middle of the woods where we were chasing this bratty bird. At that point, Fluffy could jump 7 feet, but not 8 feet, so he was finally captured. Fluffy has been helping us educate people in this area for 7 years. As we post often, Fluffy’s family still comes to visit him at our home several times a year.
