Meet Lucas! One of the newest editions to PAWS New England heading to the DC/Maryland/Virginia area this weekend! Lucas is approximately 2 years old, about 55lbs, and will be auditioning for the role of Puss in the next Shrek as he does the best sad puppy eye rendition we have seen in quite some time. Lucas does have good reason for his soulful look... He arrived in the shelter demonstrating that he had probably spent some time with people of the Lord Farquaad and evil Fairy Godmother type. When touched, he would scream in fear and throw his body to the ground, shaking. He never demonstrated any aggression of any sort, just terror that someone was going to hurt him. One of the volunteers at the shelter, (who also happens to be a trainer!), noticed him and fell completely in love. She worked with him for a week or two at the shelter with treats and positive reinforcement to show him that not all humans would hurt him. She quickly earned Lucas love and trust and decided that she would take him home to foster him. Lucas thrived in her home- did great with her other dogs, her cats, and quickly decided that he was her lap dog. He became especially clingy during his heartworm treatment where Fairy Godmother cast a spell on him and he became extremely sick for almost 4 weeks. After weeks of potions including antibiotics, steroids, and lots of TLC- Lucas finally feels like himself. He is turning into an absolute love bug and would spend his days snuggling in bed, playing with his toys, and then snuggling some more. He has been doing great with his fur siblings which include two pittie mixes and a little poodle who runs the show! Like many adolescent doggie boys- he occasionally will give attitude towards some of his siblings, but when Mom give a stern, No! Lucas runs to the corner with those pathetic eyes and hangs his head in shame. We wish all of our pups were this easy to redirect! We think he may have learned some of his attitude from Donkey... Lucas is coming to the Kingdom of Crooks and Liars (better know to some as Washington DC) where his new foster Mom will continue to help teach him that human beings will never hurt him again. As he has quickly become a PAWS favorite- we will be extra picky about his new home :) This beautiful we are mandating nothing short of the best home in the land for him.
