He has called the demise of the Soviet Union the greatest catastrophe of the 20th century. He has rejected the desire for freedom and prosperity, expressed by thousands of Ukrainians in Maidan square. Putin not only has opposed their peaceful revolution politically and economically; he also ordered Russian forces to invade Ukraine and annexed Ukrainian territory.
