Mile Post 10 Daily Update for August 11 Incident: Milepost 10 Wildfire Released: 1:05 hrs. ago Incident Summary: The Milepost 10 Fire is located 0.5 miles south of Malaga, Washington. Malaga is in Chelan County, about 8 miles south of Wenatchee. The fire was initially reported at approximately 11 PM on Friday, August 9, and was caused by lightning. It was burning in dry grass on steep rocky slopes, cliffs and benches above the Columbia River near the Rock Island Dam. Rapid spread occurred August 10, in spite of effort from Chelan County Fire District 1, Washington Department of Natural Resources, and other responding fire services, including aircraft and engines from the nearby Colockum Tarps Fire. The fire is now approximately 5,226 acres and threatens a power transmission line, a communications site, the communities of Malaga, Kingsbury, Wenatchee Heights and Stemilt. Approximately 78 residences have received Level 3 Evacuation Notification and other areas are under Level 2. Starting at 6 AM Sunday August 11, the Milepost 10 Fire will be managed by Washington Interagency Management Team #1, lead by Incident Commander Mikal Barnett. This team will also assume command of the nearby 80,184-acre Colockum Tarps Fire. A public meeting is being organized for Monday evening. Information will be posted on inciweb.org/incident/3623 as soon as details have been finalized. Planned Actions Today: Public and firefighter safety will be the top priority. Crews are assessing the situation and taking action to construct firelines around the perimeter of the fire. Hand crews, engine crews, and aircraft will be available. Weather Outlook: The area is currently under Red Flag warning for lightning. Flash flood warnings are also in effect for the fire area. South winds could be gusty at times along the ridgetops. A warming and trying trend is forecast for Tuesday. Closures: The Chelan County Sheriff’s office has posted road closed signs at Joe Miller, Jumpoff, and on private roads in the area. There will be roving patrols only residents are allowed beyond the closures. Evacuations: The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office issued the following evacuation orders Saturday: LEVEL 3 AREAS (immediate evacuation): Kingsbury Canyon Rd., Jumpoff Rd., Cathedral Rock Rd., Big Springs Ranch Rd., Crown Ln., Joe Miller Rd from Hamlin Rd to Big Springs Ranch Rd. LEVEL 2 (be ready for evacuation) Stemilt Loop Rd from Jumpoff to about 2 miles northwest LEVEL 1 (be alert) for Forest Ridge- the fire is 6-7 miles away from Forest Ridge Resources at Risk: The communities of Malaga, Kingsbury, Wenatchee Heights and Stemilt, as well as high voltage transmission lines, a natural gas pipeline, and a communications site.
