Monday 26 January 2015, 5pm Carles Guerra Homeless Stuff: Art & Languages writings Art & Languages writings count among the most esoteric stuff produced in the context of the so called Conceptual Art period. By 1969 the Art-Language magazine began to make publicly available a discussion so far kept in small circles of collaborators. The writerly practice of these young artists was meant to be an artistic practice standing by itself and circulating through printed matter. Nowadays the overwhelming literary personality of Art & Language still challenges the power of contemporary institutions to deal with artistic research. Artists writings continue to meet with a dubious recognition - not quite acknowledged as work, but more than just commentary. Back in the late 60s and early 70s the conversational practice of Art & Language anticipated a contemporary form of production founded on a language based exchange. But this avantgarde character could only be kept as long as the theoretical and discursive practice remained exceptional. An exception that soon dissolved within the cognitive capitalism that dominates our present economies. As long as it lasted it was regarded as the lifestyle embodied by artists who did not see themselves in a professional guise. All it was required to take part in the conversation was the investment of your own time and the will to socialize achievements. Going back to the technical and institutional aspects of that particular period of Art & Language we will see how they ended up providing themselves an identity – one that in spite of fostering predominant models for the economy is not easy to assimilate by even the most advanced institutional apparatusses. Carles Guerra is an artist, art critic and independent curator living in Barcelona. He is associate professor at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and has held the positions of Director of La Virreina Centre de la Imatge and Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona MACBA.
