More diversity is needed in the health and health care industry for the delivery of culturally and competent care. A few years ago, an old g/f of mine was doing a summer internship in New Haven, CT at Yale. She said, The doctors were experts in their field but where Yale is located there is a huge Latin population and not enough doctors to communicate with patients. As an intern, the doctors used me as interpreter with patients. I wonder how they communicated with patients before I got here and what they are going to do when Im gone. Another young lady in the Social Welfare program at Berkeley told how, At my safety net hospital, I had to stop unnecessary surgeries which arose because of language barriers.
