My friends, please take a couple of minutes of your day to watch this BBC interview with excerpts from a new and important documentary film about the daily lives of Syrians struggling to survive. Polish filmmaker Michal Przedlacki spent months in Syria filming Aleppo, Notes from the Dark. His goal was to tell the story of everyday Syrians who have had to take up arms to defend themselves against a regime that knows no boundaries - barrel bombs, chemical and poisonous gas, torture, execution, and rape. He poignantly documents Syrians struggling to survive in one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world, Aleppo. What he was most struck by was despite the grave hardships suffered by the Syrians under siege, the kindness, warmth and civility of the Syrian people showed for him and others. The filmmaker also sought to debunk the prevailing worldview that the crisis is a civil war, or a conflict between Shite and Sunni, instead he rightfully characterizes the crisis as a struggle between freedom and oppression. Beyond watching the news segment, Id ask each of you to think about ways to help the Syrian people. The scale of the tragedy maybe overwhelming, but you can help change a life for at least one Syrian or family in need. Dont let Syria be another Rwanda if we had only known... You know whats happening, find a way to help.
