My primary school is merging with another school soon. Bedok West - TopicsExpress

My primary school is merging with another school soon. Bedok West Primary School will soon vanish from Singapore. I called the school and introduced myself as an alumnus. The person on the line quickly snapped that the school doesnt have an alumni. According to her, Im an old girl, not alumni. I asked if we could organize a farewell party for the school. She retorted that they would not allow outsiders to come to their school to have a party. After some explanation on my part, she just asked me to try sending an email. A couple of years ago I spoke to the principal then, to discuss my concerns about boosting enrolment to prevent closure. The principal was hostile because she felt that I was interfering in the schools matters. These administrative people dont understand. To them, this might be one of their many jobs, and the place they toll to get their paychecks. But for many of us, our primary schools hold a very different meaning. It is the place where we made our first friends, had our first loves, had our first sports day, first learnt to buy our own food, and first had our exams. Its the place we learnt how to play capteh, five stones and captains ball. Its the place we were made to stand when we chatted in class. The place we were made to sweep the floor, disturb friends, laugh, cry, pull our teeth, and get our first science badge. There are so many memories in the 6 years of primary school that live in my memory, and Im sure, that of many. It is sad that the people in charge of the school, do not recognise that.
