NEWS UPDATE AT 3PM WITH ORANGE The Forum of African First Ladies against Breast, Cervical and Prostate Cancer has unanimously signed the Windhoek declaration with a commitment to stop the spread of cancer in their respective countries. The 18 First Ladies pledged to intensify advocacy for adequate human, technical and financial resources to achieve universal access to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations, treatment and care for cancers by working with religious, traditional and community leaders as well as civil society organizations and the media to promote awareness and disseminate accurate health information before choosing Kenya as the host of their 9th Conference next year. Five countries had bid to host the conference. Members of Parliament representing Kampala have appealed to the House to prevail upon Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Minister for Kampala to halt the pending evictions. The MPs want the relevant agencies to undertake dialogue with the affected people to find an amicable solution. MPs Richard Sebuliba Mutumba Moses Kasibante and Ken Lukyamuzi made the plea in Parliament protesting the planned “massive” displacement of people in areas including Wandegeya, Mengo, Nakulabye, Kironde, Nanfuka, Ndeba and Nalukolongo. Recently, KCCA gave encroachers on the railway line reserve 28 days to vacate. The authority is planning to introduce railway transport service in a bid to reduce traffic in the city centre. National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has welcomed the appointment of the Parliament’s select committee to investigate the alleged mismanagement in the Fund. This after Speaker Rebecca Kadaga ruled that a Select Committee be set up to investigate specific matters of mismanagement in the Fund. the committee to be chaired by Kalungu East Member of Parliament Hon. Vincent Ssempijja will conduct investigations into matters of mismanagement which include allegations that the NSSF irregularly acquired shares in Umeme; allegations of nepotism in recruitment of staff and irregular disposal of assets.The Select Committee has up to the August 19, 2014 to investigate and report back to the House. The UNs top human rights official has condemned Israels military actions in the Gaza Strip, saying that war crimes may have been committed.Navi Pillay told an emergency debate at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that Israels military offensive had not done enough to protect civilians.She also criticised Hamas for indiscriminate attacks on Israel. A French court has jailed three men for rioting after a pro-Palestinian rally in a mixed suburb of Paris degenerated into anti-Semitic violence.The three men, aged 21 and 28, were given sentences of between six and 10 months for their part in the rioting in Sarcelles on Sunday.
