NYAKO DARES ASSEMBLY, REFUSES TO COMPLY WITH DIRECTIVE ON REFUNDS OF WORKERS DEDUCTED SALARIES- Kushi GeorgeAIT News Yola. Uneasy calm has enveloped Adamawa State over Gpvernor Nyakos refusal to comply with a legislative directive by the state House of Assembly to refund what the legislators termed as an illegal deduction of the workers May Salary. The illegal deduction roused the ire of the workforce in the state thus prompting the lawmakers to unanimously pass a resolution directing the governor to refund the deducted amount which amounted to one hundred and fourty two million Naira, the governor was to ensure refund within one week. Also as a part of the the resolution the governor was also ordered to pay the two months outstanding workers salaries that was denied them in August and September 2011. Many people who spoke to AIT visibly expressed amazement and anger at the governors obstinacy in complying with the order. They equally called on the Assembly members to intensify efforts at reclaiming back their rightful entitlements which was deliberated denied them. Reacting to the situation the Adamawa State PDP chairman Chief Joel H. Madaki in a press release described the governors refusal to meet up the demand on the stipulated on or before Friday 30th May 2014 ultimatum as a gross violation and disrespect to constituted authority. Madaki described Nyakos action as a brazen broad day looting of the workers money despite his non performance in terms of meaningful development. The party chairman therefore called on the members to take a decisive action in order to salvage the state. Also speaking on the issue the Clerk of the Adamawa State house of Assembly Mr Gbensenso F R informed AIT that the governor did not communicate to the House of Assembly any reason for the non compliance of the directive. The House Clerk further informed that only documents of expenditures that does not relate to the matter was forwarded to the assembly through Houses E-mail address from the Accountant Generals office. It could be recalled that the Adamawa State House of Assembly had during a plenary last week through a resolution directed the refunds of monies deducted from civil servants salaries and at the same ordered for the refunds of the two months outstanding salaries owed civil servants since 2011. The legislators also summoned the State commissioner of Finance Ibrahim Buba Vokna and the state Accountant General Mohammed Nasir to explain the circumstances that led to the illegal deductions. It is on record that both the two summoned governments financial officials failed to make satisfactory explanations to the legislators on the issue thus warranting the lawmakers to order that the state payment vouchers, pay slips and expenditures for the months of April and May 2015 be presented to the assembly for perusal. As things stands now, it appears the battle line is drawn with daggers drawn between the State lawmakers who have picked up the gauntlet to ensure checks and balances and the governor who has defied a constituted legislative order while exhibiting an aloof stance. How the matter will be resolved is for time to tell as the Adamawa State House of Assembly is on recess to be back on the 9th June 2014.
