Nelumbo Komarovii (or Amur lotus) is the most northern growing lotus. It grows in the Amur region of Far Eastern Russia, just north of China and North Korea. The rare lotus was named after distinguished Russian botanist and geographer Vladimir Komarov who was engaged in research of Far Eastern plant species in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Rightfully named a living fossil, this relic plant existed millions of years ago, back in the Mesozoic era and managed to survive the Ice Age. What is most distinctive about this species, is its sustainability - under unfavorable conditions, its seeds enter a state of anabiosis instead of germinating. This slows down all biological processes and helps the flower to survive. Surrounded by myths and legends for many centuries, lotus has been worshipped and ascribed mystical power, particularly in the countries of South East Asia, as evidenced by ancient manuscripts, architectural and cultural monuments. In India, it was believed that Earth emerged as a huge lotus flower and the paradise was depicted as a pink lotus lake where holy souls dwell. Lotus is also known for its medical uses - it tones up the activity of the whole organism and strengthens the immune system. Its seeds and other parts are widely used in present-day Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese and Tibetan medicine. The beautiful plant closes its petals during the night, and reopens in the morning. The flower always bends toward sunlight, and only grows in pure, non-polluted water. Though they are beautiful, they are very rare, and therefor under protection from the government In China and Japan lotus is considered a symbol of harmony and purity, but unlike Russia, there are no lakes where the Komarov lotus grows in these countries. Therefore, tourists annually come to the Russian Far East to enjoy this magnificent spectacle and the unparalleled delicate spicy scent. Source: voiceofrussia Posted by Y
