#News: New #USPeaceCorps volunteers to provide development assistance services in #Ethiopia US Ambassador Patricia Haslach administered the oath of service to 66 new Peace Corps Volunteers at the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa on Friday (September 19) last week. This brings the number of Peace Corps Volunteers in Ethiopia to 231, helping to provide English language education, combat HIV/AIDS, prevent environmental degradation, and promote food security. They are working in different regions of the country, in the Amhara, Oromia, Tigray, and SNNP Regional States. The latest groups are all education volunteers and will work as English teachers in Ethiopian high schools under the Promoting English Language Learning in Ethiopia project in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Ethiopia was one of the first countries to invite the Peace Corps to establish its program in Ethiopia in 1962, just a year after President Kennedy established the Peace Corps. The primary focus of the first program was education with goal of training skilled workers and promoting economic development. Subsequently the volunteers have worked in other sectors including health, agriculture and tourism.
