News Update:: After a low profile observance for the past 10 years, India’s victory in the Kargil War of 1999 during the previous NDA rule under Atal Bihari Vajpayee has regained its prime place in military celebration under the Narendra Modi Government. Army Chief General Bikram Singh is scheduled to be present in Kargil to remember the martyrs of the war, the first of its kind fought during the TV news era, bringing the battlefield right into the living rooms. “The Army is preparing extensively to honour the martyrs of the Kargil War in a series of solemn ceremonies this year. The primary event which shall mark the 15th anniversary of the Victory is scheduled to be held at the War Memorial at Drass on July 25 and 26,” Army’s Udhampur-based Northern Command PRO Colonel S D Goswami said from Jammu and Kashmir. Though there is talk in the Army headquarters here that Defence Minister Arun Jaitley may join the celebration this year, a confirmation from the Minister’s office on his programme is awaited, sources here said. The Kargil conflict was fought in the summer of 1999 to evict Pakistani regular forces, who had intruded and occupied posts vacated on the Indian side of the LoC during the winter months, violating an unwritten agreement. This year, on July 25, the much vaunted Army bands will present a display, followed by a solemn memorial service. On July 25, top officers of the Army, martyrs’ families, war heroes, political representatives and the civil administration would participate in the commemorative wreath laying ceremony at the Kargil War Memorial located at the base of the Tololing feature, the scene of one of the fiercest battles.
