No Thanksgiving break today with the hard thinking students of #WyoSocialStudies. Topics we explored through curriculum deliberation today in Social Studies methods included how the U.S. commemorates Saturdays anniversary of JFKs assassination, the cultural politics of Thanksgiving, how to teach about Ferguson, the mythology of the Boston Tea Party, the legacy of the 3/5ths compromise, and how to simulate a town hall meeting in a civics class. But the most important lesson stemmed from a debate about Black Friday and how for many families who feel a cultural imperative to provide presents for their children during the holidays necessitates engaging in the consumerism of layaway and Black Friday. Is it too easy to stay at home and condemn the spectacle of Black Friday especially if youre not struggling to find a way to buy a present for your children? And how do we make spaces in our classrooms to think about consumerism, tradition, recognition, and related issues? Im very thankful for the privilege to make for a living what I find immensely rewarding doing.
