Now I wouldnt usually comment on these things but having followed the Mercury Music Prize for many years, even playing on it more than 10 years ago (that long... Oh dear), some themes are annoyingly reoccurring... No, Im not for a moment suggesting that one of the great jazz acts from our shores should have actually won the main prize... No. Bar 20k, that could obviously be a blessing or a curse depending who you speak to and ultimately for some, it is truly not about the winning but the taking part... Its a nice list to be on representing some quality sounds from a beautiful variety of sources and ultimately if you dont win, you can hopefully if not happily carry on making the music you would want to with additional pressure, with at worst a wider awareness of your musical existence from the general music loving public and perhaps even an increased fan-base. But here is the thing?... When will the Mercury folks get some people to comment on anything Jazz tinged without them feeling the need to claim there lack of knowledge in the area first and then proceed to practically slag off the whole genre before they actually get to the bit about whether they actually enjoyed the music or not!?! ITS ALL MUSIC PEOPLE - Get Over It!!!
