October is my favorite month; there is so much to do this month. Growing up in Kentucky October marked the opening of archery deer season, squirrel season was in full swing and the beech nuts were ripe. Hunting squirrels in the beech trees is like chasing deer during the rut. They are constantly moving from limb to limb feasting on the small easily opened nuts. Unlike when feeding on walnuts and hickories where they may sit twenty minutes chewing on a nut. Doves were still open and abundant but hunters to help cover a field were not. Here in Kansas archery deer is open, duck season starts in the west, squirrels are not abundant and doves are spotty. But there never is a lack of something to hunt. Duck season opens in the early and high plains zones Saturday the 5th way too early this year. Our early season leans heavily on waterfowl raised in the area and this year due the drought few ducks nested in the area. The early migrants (teal) did not show up until after the middle of September when normally they start arriving with the full red moon in August before the harvest moon of September. While we have water this year early duck hunting will be slow unless we get a cold blast from the north. Doves are still around and if one finds a hot water hole a lone hunter can have a good shoot. Archery deer is good but I prefer to wait until we have some cooler weather. I don’t like risking spoiled meat in temps above eighty degrees. Fishing however will still be good as fish are feeding heavily in preparation for winter. This time of year hit the shallows as the waters cool down towards the sixty degree range. Most of the activity will be in the afternoon hours at the time of the warmest water temps. Tight lines and good hunting.
