Odds are good you and I have had a discussion about the relationship between Notre Dame and South Bend, and the importance of convincing undergrads (the hardest population to reach, those within the bubble) that South Bend is a place for them to come out and have a good time. Weve got so much awesome stuff going on in this town, and - if Ive discussed this topic with you before - youre part of that awesomeness (and odds are good youre part of it even if we aint talked bout this yet). Anyhow, the University invited the Roller Girls to have a bout on campus. Tickets are strictly for ND students; a policy frequently enacted on campus for awesome events, and one that (while not unreasonable) often feels like a slap in the face to the Greater Michiana Community. In this case, the policy excludes the sizable local fan base for the South Bend Roller Girls. Nonetheless, there is a simulcast of the bout at Touchdown Sports Bar, and the derby girls will be heading there after the match. Im hoping a number of Notre Dame undergrads come in tow - and the subset of underground domers that come to this event will be an ideal target market for pitching a more interwoven narrative for Notre Dame and South Bend - which could have a meaningful economic input downtown and contribute to the #SouthBendRenaissance. If youre part of something awesome here, and youd like to see us burst The Bubble and integrate the ND community with our local Renaissance, I think this is a uniquely valuable event to attend.
