Okay, lets catch up with the 1887 diary of 19 year Ezra Fitch Pabody. Heres what hes been up to so far in October: Saturday October 1. Our cow has been swimming around the fence and this morn I added another length to it. Rowed over to Dr. Averys with Mama and Nellie this morn. Mrs. Avery and Harry were the only ones left and they went to the city this aft. The cow swam around the fence after I lengthened it and I had a hard chase for her. We all went over to Firefly Island this aft and walked around the paths near the Eagles Nest. The moon rose beautifully this eve but clouds have hidden it and the air feels like rain. Sunday October 2. It was cloudy this morn but rather warm and pleasant. About fifteen were at the church service. Soon after noon the wind changed from the south to the north-west and blew a gale of for two or three hours. It has cleared off beautifully this eve and the moon is shining very bright. Staid in the house nearly all afternoon and read. Went up to the hotel just before supper to see about getting to the station in the morning. Quite mild this eve. 52 this morn. Monday October 3. We were up about six oclock this morn. Nellie and I rode to the station in Mr. Palmers wagon. Train was late and I did not reach school until ten o?clock. Auntie was away to dinner and Nellie and I had dinner alone. Went down town on some errands this aft. There was quite a fire on Hennepin avenue just above the Holmes building. Nellie went out to see Mrs. Monroe and took tea with her. Tuesday October 4. Has been cool and clear, a delightful day. Drove around for Auntie most of the afternoon. While I had the horse I did several errands down town. While driving, one of the traces broke, but I was able to fix it without any trouble. Sent away this aft for price-lists of fountain pens. Made a fire in the furnace last evening and it has seemed very pleasant today. We have taken up the study of Chaucer and are going to spend considerable time for it. Virgil lessons rather hard just now. Wednesday October 5. Thermometer went down to freezing this morn and the mud was frozen in the streets. Wrote up my literature this afternoon and then went down town for exercise. Bought some Bonners for the teeth and some dye for making ink. Aunt Myra came in from the lake this evening to stay with Mrs. Monroe for several days. Another meeting of the Senior class after school but I did not stay to it. The Exposition will be open only nine days more and I must go again soon. Thursday October 6. Went down town this afternoon and bought a number of things to take to the lake. Went to the post-office and ordered our mail sent to the house instead. Bought two pairs of flannel drawers for myself. Stopped at Harry Bailys for over an hour. Found Jinnie at the house when I got home and she will stay until tomorrow morning. Nellie and I have been playing some of our duets this evening. Has been quite mild and pleasant today. Friday October 7. Was practicing this aft when Mr. Gahrsha came over and asked me to drive over to the church for Auntie. I went over and took her down to the Women s Christian Association meeting. Was raining nearly all afternoon but at half past four Nellie and I went down to the depot and took the train for Zumbro Heights. We found no one at the station and started off in the rain but met Mr. Palmers carriage and rode home. Mr. Hall, who came out to the lake yesterday, did not come over this evening as we expected. Saturday October 8 Went up to Mr. Palmers this morn and got some pumpkin with which Mama made some most excellent pies for dinner. Mr. Hall put away his boat and put his house in order this morn and then took dinner with us before starting for Excelsior. Rained nearly all afternoon and I staid in the house nearly all afternoon and read. Wrote my French exercise before supper and studied my Virgil in the evening. There has been no frost here yet and the garden is still quite green.
