On October 18, nearly 60 Mercy emergency staff, local fire and rescue squads/EMTs, gathered at Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, to attend Lessons learned from MCI incidents in Israel presented by Guy Caspi. Caspi is a paramedic, chief multi-casualty incident instructor, and director of hazmat exercises and operational training for Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s ambulance, disaster relief and blood services organization. He also serves as a faculty member for the paramedics program at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Because of the sheer number of acts of terrorism Israel has endured, MDA has emerged as the world’s most experienced paramedic organization in responding to multi-casualty incidents. MDA has pioneered techniques and protocols that are being used worldwide, including in the Boston Marathon bombing. Guests also had a chance to ask questions and discuss methods to mass casualty response such as identify triage, treatment and transport methodologies, safety measures for first responders, dispatch responsibilities for MCIs and ongoing emergency calls, transporting patients and best practices for EMS and MCIs.
