On October 2, 2014, U.S. Embassy Manila’s United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director, Gloria D. Steele, led the turnover of two school buildings with 10 classrooms at the Tacloban National Agricultural School (TNAS) with total estimated construction cost of USD$471,993 (Php20.1 Million) as part of a larger reconstruction effort to rebuild and equip 165 classrooms in Tacloban. The classrooms are designed to withstand high velocity winds up to 360 kilometers per hour (which exceeds winds produced by Typhoon Yolanda) and an earthquake magnitude of 8.5 on the Richter scale. “The priority we give to building classrooms is recognition of the critically important role of education in poverty alleviation. It is also a reaffirmation that education is a basic human right to which everyone should have access,” says Steele.
