On the night of November 29, 1864 Colonel Chivington and his volunteer regiments marched on the peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho along the banks of the Big Sandy Creek in southeastern Colorado. The resulting incident will be the topic of a free evening interpretive program at the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site (NHS) this Sat., April 19, 2014. While not directly related to Fort Laramie, this event is an important episode in Western/ Cheyenne/ Arapaho history. Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site park staff will be putting on an evening program that will discuss events related to the all night march of 675 soldiers of the 1st and 3rd Regiments Cavalry, Colorado Volunteers from Fort Lyon to the Cheyenne and Arapaho encampment on Sand Creek.
