On the way into the co-op tonight, a car sped up and swerved to hit a wood duck. His mate managed to fly away but the poor fellows neck was broken. The cars behind him didnt stop, he must have been hit two or three more time. My kids saw it, Lily was screaming. I pulled the car over and walked out to pick him up, copping an earful of abuse and horns from the traffic. The little old lady who puts out water and food for that pair of ducks was distraught, she just kept saying Oh, the pretty thing, who would want to hurt such a pretty thing. He died in my arms while I tried to get the guts up to end his suffering. The little old lady insisted on washing the blood off my hands. His mate flew back and landed nearby, hooting and hollering for him. I dont know if arboreal ducks mate for life, but they are very dedicated partners. She cried and cried and cried.
