One of the highlights of our trip to SOPPEXCCAs member farms: meeting Don Juan Montenegro. At nearly 90 years old, he is growing beans and corn with son-in-law Pablo, to both feed their family and sell back to the coop. SOPPEXCCA is promoting this diversification strategy for coffee farmers, many of whom have lost up to 80% of their coffee crop due to coffee rust. This key resource -- providing financing to incentivize farmers to grow basic grains and sell them to the coop -- also helps other families in the community buy food at a reasonable price, year round, building food security and stronger local food systems.
