Only muscles that are completely relaxed are capable of maximum contraction and of supplying themselves with sufficient nutrients. By the same token, a muscle capable of full contraction and relaxation is capable of transporting lactic acid and other metabolic waste products away faster, whereas a permanently tense muscle can never achieve its full performance capacity.
