Opera North to revive Carousel Opera North will revive its production of Carousel as part of its 2014/15 season, the company announced today. The production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic American musical will be revived for a tour beginning in May 2015 at Leeds Grand Theatre, three years after its initial run. Directed by Jo Davies and conducted by James Holmes – who both worked on the production in 2012 – casting includes Claire Boulter, Gillene Butterfield, Yvonne Howard and Joseph Shovelton, who also all reprise their roles from the original staging. Also on the programme for the 2014/15 season are several new opera productions which will visit venues including Leeds Grand Theatre, the Theatre Royal in Newcastle, the Lowry, Nottingham’s Theatre Royal and the Grand Opera House in Belfast. Opera North’s La traviata, the company’s first production of Verdi’s opera since 1999, tours from September 20 until March 27, 2015. It will star South Korean soloists Hye-Youn Lee and Ji-Min Park as well as Polish soprano Anna Jerus-Kopec. Never before staged by Opera North, Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea will run from October 4 until November 29, and will be conducted by Laurence Cummings. Daniel Slater revives his 1998 production of Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, running October 18 until November 27, which will feature Scottish soprano Kate Valentine and American tenor Brenden Gunnell, while Alexander Shelley conducts his first opera for the company – Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, which opens January 24, 2015. A double bill of de Falla’s La vida breve and Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, opening February 18, 2015, will be directed by Christopher Alden and will star Anne Sophie Duprels (La vida breve) and renowned baritone Christopher Purves (Gianni Schicchi). A new production of Jonathan Dove’s 2009 family chamber opera Swanhunter is the most contemporary piece on the programme and will open at the Linbury Studio Theatre at the Royal Opera House on April 2, 2015, before transferring to the Howard Assembly Room, Leeds, ahead of a tour. Completing the line up is Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, which will be conducted by Richard Farnes. It will open at Leeds Town Hall on June 27, 2015, before touring to the Sage Gateshead, Symphony Hall Birmingham, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham. The production will be one of Farnes’ last for Opera North, where he has been music director for 12 years.
